Michael Howlett

My background was in mainstream construction working for small local property developers before building two urban straw bale houses in West Wales and founding Strawbuild (www.strawbuild.org) with Bee Rowan, formerly of Amazonails. My role is primarily office based, specialising in building design, planning & building regulations consultancy and energy and ecological assessments, although I love to get hands on with straw, clay, wood and lime. I have contributed illustrations and graphics for various things including a book (Eco House; a Design Guide – Roaf/Fuentes/Thomas) a pan-European straw bale building training programme (http://www.strawleonardo.eu) and a manual for making and using lime-stabilised soil in construction (http://www.iom.int/lime-stabilized-construction-manual-and-practical-guide). I've been involved both on and off-site in numerous straw bale builds around the U.K. and Ireland from houses to a cafe, an industrial coldstore and a pig barn (among other things) and have also been involved in 2/3 of successful OPD (One Planet Developments) applications to date in Wales.
